🎬 Must-See Moments
The top highlights and biggest plays from yesterday’s WBC games.

What a crazy and slightly unfortunate situation for Team USA last night. Italy vs. USA was a fantastic game, but it was also accompanied by some potentially questionable decisions from manager Mark DeRosa.

First off, shout out to my guy Michael Lorenzen, who pitched an absolute gem against a stacked USA lineup. Italy has played outstanding baseball throughout the WBC, but it still felt like the United States was comfortable rolling out more of a B-squad lineup.

That idea gained even more traction after a concerning clip surfaced from DeRosa’s pregame press conference where he said the following, which might help explain it:

Not a great look when Mark DeRosa said before the game that Team USA had already advanced and admitted he did not know how the tiebreaker situation worked. He later addressed the situation after the game, saying:

Ooooof…

Look, Team USA is stacked from top to bottom and even the bench is loaded with talent, but this is not a great look. There has been a ton of back and forth across baseball media about whether Mark DeRosa simply misspoke or if he genuinely did not realize the situation.

What do you think about it?

So where do things sit now?

Tonight’s Pool B finale between Italy and Mexico will decide everything, including Team USA’s fate. Italy enters the matchup 3-0 after stunning the United States earlier in the tournament, while Mexico sits at 2-1.

If Italy wins, both Italy and Team USA advance to the quarterfinals. But if Mexico wins, they move on, and the final score will determine whether Italy or the United States joins them. In other words, Team USA will be scoreboard watching as the final game of pool play decides who survives and who goes home.

Over in Pool A, tomorrow’s Canada vs. Cuba matchup is essentially a win-or-go-home game, with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals and the loser eliminated from the tournament.

Meanwhile, the 3–0 Dominican Republic will face undefeated Venezuela, with major seeding implications at stake. The loser of that game would be set up for a daunting matchup against undefeated Japan in the knockout round.
