🚨 Red Sox Trade Rafael Devers to Giants in Stunning Midseason Blockbuster

  • The Red Sox sent Rafael Devers to the Giants for pitchers Jordan Hicks, Kyle Harrison, and prospects James Tibbs III and Jose Bello just after sweeping the Yankees for their seventh win in eight games.

  • Devers hit his 15th homer and 500th career extra-base hit in his final game with Boston before the trade. The 28-year-old signed a 10-year, $313.5 million deal before the 2024 season.

  • Tension built after Boston signed Alex Bregman this spring and asked Devers to transition to DH, then later requested he play first base following Triston Casas’ season-ending injury, which Devers declined.

  • The Red Sox clear significant payroll with Devers’ contract off the books while adding pitching depth and prospects. Boston plans to fast-track Masataka Yoshida’s return to DH as roster flexibility opens up.

💬 Editor’s Take

People might kill me for this but I actually think the Red Sox will thrive after this trade. Flashback to 2004, Red Sox and their fans went through a similar transaction when they traded the face of the franchise, Nomar Garciaparra. Garciaparra was in a Devers’ like situation where his defense had declined post injury and there were tensions from the botched A-Rod trade in the offseason. Two decades later, the trade is still seen as one of the most painful yet pivotal decisions that ultimately helped Boston finally break its curse and win the World Series.

This trade will allow the Red Sox to roll out a much better team defensively each night, and also more importantly it opens the door for more consistent at bats for the kids. Narvaez and Bregman can fill DH during off days defensively, Marcelo and Roman can get additional at bats vs lefties, and this also possibly opens to door for Blaze Jordan who is hitting .321 in AA/AAA.

Now for the Giants, the sky (World Series) is the limit. Devers, Eldridge (soon), Chapman, Ramos, Lee, Adames, and an elite pitching staff sets them up for serious contention versus the Dodgers and Padres for the NL West race.
