The World Baseball Classic is back and this time the tournament feels bigger than ever.

What once started as a baseball experiment has evolved into one of the sport’s most anticipated global events. Much of that momentum came from the unforgettable 2023 championship game, a dramatic finale that helped push the WBC into the spotlight.

Now the tournament returns in 2026 with 20 national teams, global superstars, and plenty of unfinished business.

Defending champion Samurai Japan is chasing a record fourth World Baseball Classic title, while Team USA is looking for redemption after its heartbreaking loss in the last final. Meanwhile, powerhouse nations like the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and Mexico enter the tournament with championship expectations and the possibility always exists that another Cinderella team could steal the spotlight.

Editor’s Note: There is a poll at the end, would love to hear who you think will win this year’s WBC! Thanks for reading and hope everyone has a great Thursday 😀

🌎 Tournament Format

The 20 participating nations are split into four pools of five teams. Each team plays the others in its pool once during round-robin play.

The top two teams from each pool advance to the knockout stage, which shifts to a single-elimination bracket for the quarterfinals, semifinals, and championship game.

If teams are tied after pool play, tiebreakers will determine who advances, starting with head-to-head results.

⚾ Special Rules in the WBC

Because the tournament takes place during the professional season calendar, several rules exist to protect pitchers and players.

Pitch limits

  • Pool play: 65 pitches

  • Quarterfinals: 80 pitches

  • Semifinals and championship: 95 pitches

Pitchers who throw 30 or more pitches must rest one day, while those who exceed 50 pitches must rest four days.

Other notable rules include:

  • Mercy rule:

    • Game ends after 7 innings if a team leads by 10+ runs

    • Game ends after 5 innings if a team leads by 15+ runs

    • Not used in semifinals or championship

  • Extra innings: ghost runner rule

  • Pitch clock: introduced for the first time in the WBC

The Automatic Ball-Strike System will not be used during the tournament.

Pool-by-Pool Preview

🇵🇷 Pool A — San Juan, Puerto Rico

Teams: Puerto Rico, Cuba, Canada, Panama, Colombia

Pool A may be the most balanced group in the tournament.

Puerto Rico enters with home-field advantage but is missing some key stars. Cuba remains dangerous thanks to elite pitching, including 2025 Pacific League MVP Lívan Moinelo and closer Raidel Martínez, who has allowed just 22 earned runs over the past four NPB seasons.

Canada brings a strong lineup even without Freddie Freeman and could finally advance from the group stage, while Colombia and Panama are rising baseball nations capable of pulling off an upset.

🇺🇸 Pool B — Houston, Texas

Teams: United States, Mexico, Italy, Great Britain, Brazil

Team USA enters the tournament with one of the most star-studded rosters in the field as it tries to reclaim the title after losing to Japan in the 2023 final.

The Americans are led by stars including Aaron Judge, Bryce Harper, Bobby Witt Jr., Cal Raleigh, Paul Skenes, and Tarik Skubal.

Mexico is once again a major contender after its deep run in the last Classic, led by Randy Arozarena, Jarren Duran, Alejandro Kirk, and Andrés Muñoz.

Italy is hoping to repeat its surprising 2023 quarterfinal run, while Brazil is returning to the tournament for the first time since 2013 and enters with a very young roster.

🇯🇵 Pool C — Tokyo, Japan

Teams: Japan, Australia, South Korea, Czechia, Chinese Taipei

All eyes in Pool C are on defending champion Japan.

With a roster filled with stars from both MLB and Nippon Professional Baseball including Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Masataka Yoshida, Seiya Suzuki, Kazuma Okamoto, and Munetaka Murakami, Japan enters as one of the tournament favorites.

Chinese Taipei and South Korea are expected to challenge for the second qualifying spot, while Australia hopes to build on its breakthrough 2023 performance.

Czechia once again enters as the tournament underdog but proved in the last Classic that it can compete with baseball’s traditional powers.

🇩🇴 Pool D — Miami, Florida

Teams: Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Netherlands, Israel, Nicaragua

Pool D may feature the most explosive offensive talent in the entire tournament.

The Dominican Republic arrives with a superstar lineup featuring Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Juan Soto, Julio Rodríguez, Fernando Tatis Jr., and Manny Machado, backed by pitchers Sandy Alcantara and Cristopher Sánchez.

Venezuela counters with its own group of stars including Ronald Acuña Jr., Jackson Chourio, Salvador Perez, Luis Arraez, Eugenio Suárez, and Gleyber Torres.

The Netherlands, Israel, and Nicaragua round out the group, with the Dutch historically known for pulling off surprises in international play.
